So when last I wrote, ages ago it seems, I was making sure I had sufficient projects for hospital knitting, while S. was in and recovering from surgery. Lace – check. Fair Isle – check. Socks – check. Stockinette – check. I had it all covered. Surgery was scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30. On Monday afternoon, the phone call came – the hospital didn't have a bed available, so surgery was postponed until Nov. 27. Grrrr. I was thoroughly annoyed. So I cancelled my vacation days and returned to work.
Then, the following week, on Wednesday, Nov 7, I was woken up by the phone ringing very early in the morning. I hoped it was a wrong number.
It wasn't. It was my Mom telling me that my Dad had passed away that morning. I took a flight to Halifax that day, and stayed until this past Thursday evening.
Dad was 77. He had had a stroke 14 years ago, from which he made a remarkable recovery, due to his fortitude and hard work. Although he couldn't speak very well, and walked slowly, up until the day he died he was out walking every day, and he always had a smile on his face and a pleasant greeting for everyone he met. He lived life to the fullest and had great appreciation for everything he had and everything he could do.
On Tuesday, he had a perfectly normal day. In the afternoon, he went out walking for a couple of hours, as he did every day, rain or shine. He then went home, had dinner, watched the hockey game and went to bed at 11. And he just didn't wake up. Although we are all saddened, and will miss him terribly, we are comforted by the fact that he didn't suffer and didn't struggle with a long illness.
When it's my time to go, I hope I'm fortunate enough to go like my Dad did.
Goodbye Dad. We'll miss you
