Cheaper than Therapy

Remember a few weeks ago a showed you this lovely skein of silk yarn that I had purchased?

Handmaiden Silk Skein

Well, that skein was the most expensive skein of yarn I had ever purchased for myself. I don't buy crap yarns, because I don't like knitting with crap yarns, but I don't usually buy luxury yarns either. I generally buy reasonably priced yarns that give me lots of knitting time for the buck.  But I figured, what the hell, I'm going through a personal crisis – I needed to treat myself to something special.

The skein sat on my desk (at home, not at work!) for a week where I fondled it every chance I got. Just feeling the silky softness made me happy. Then I wound it in a ball and swatched it until the yarn revealed what it wanted to be. I love having the yarn speak to me.   I cast on, and started knitting. I didn't rush this project – I worked on it a bit at a time. I loved feeling the silk flow through my fingers. I loved feeling each stitch form. I often held it up to my cheek just to feel how soft it was. I used a simple pattern, with a simple border – I didn't want the beautiful colours to conflict with the pattern.

I bought this yarn specifically to make a triangular scarf that I could wear with my spring/fall coat. The coat is quite open at the neck, so when it's a bit chilly out it's nice to have something to cover my throat.  Yesterday I blocked the scarf. This morning there was a chill in the air, so I wore the scarf for the first time. The feeling of the silk against my throat was wonderful. It looks great with my coat, and it's just the right size to fill in the gap without being big and bulky

All this pleasure for a mere $35. When you look at it that way, it was a downright bargain.

 Cheaper than therapy.

And also … $35? That’s a dinner and a show, three hours entertainment, and then it’s gone. What you have there is an “investment.”

The scarf looks great. it’d be a hoot if I saw you on the street here in Ottawa, and identified you by the scarf. Don’t worry, it’s not that likely.

That is a work of art!! Gorgeous colours.

Hey, when I have my flock of sheep on my new farm (next year, I hope), and I’ve learned to spin their fleece (not to mention sheer them, never mind all the other farm stuff I have to learn), you’ll have to remind me to send you some yarn. I have llamas on the brain too, or maybe alpacas!
